Dominican Republic: rains will continue until Friday, Indomet says, and the COE keeps provinces on alert
Santo Domingo — The rains that again flooded streets in Greater Santo Domingo on Tuesday will not end tonight: the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) expects precipitation to continue Wednesday and Thursday and to begin easing gradually from Thursday, with a more marked reduction on Friday.
Meteorologist Gloria Ceballos explained, in remarks reported by Noticias SIN, that moisture carried by southerly winds and the influence of two troughs are keeping atmospheric instability over the country. That is why, even as intensity falls in the coming days, the risk does not disappear at once, especially in areas where soils are already saturated.
In its bulletin on Tuesday morning, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) kept Independencia, Pedernales, Bahoruco, Barahona, Azua, San José de Ocoa, Peravia, San Cristóbal and Greater Santo Domingo on yellow alert, and Dajabón, Elías Piña, San Juan, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez and Monte Plata on green alert. Authorities warn of urban flooding and rising rivers, streams and ravines.
This update follows up on Tuesday’s report on the flooding in Santo Domingo and the trough alerts, which can be read here: Dominican Republic: trough rains flood Santo Domingo streets and the COE keeps 17 provinces on alert.
Authorities repeat the call to follow official bulletins, avoid crossing rivers, streams and flooded streets, and review family emergency plans. In an emergency, the number to call is 911.
