Dominican Republic: trough rains flood streets in Santo Domingo as emergency center keeps 17 provinces on alert
Santo Domingo — Rains linked to a trough flooded much of Santo Domingo again on Tuesday, according to reports and videos shared during the day, while the Emergency Operations Center (COE) keeps 17 provinces on alert over the risk of urban flooding and overflowing rivers, streams and ravines.
According to the bulletin reported by CDN37, 10 provinces remain on yellow alert and 7 on green alert. Rainfall, ranging from moderate to heavy, comes with thunderstorms and wind gusts and is falling on soils already saturated by previous days' rain, increasing the risk in vulnerable areas.
The forecast indicates the rains will continue over the next 24 to 48 hours and could intensify in the Cibao region, especially on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Rainy conditions could persist until Wednesday or Thursday across much of the country.
Authorities repeat their call for the public to follow official bulletins, review family emergency plans and avoid crossing rivers, streams or flooded areas. In case of emergency, the number to call is 911.
The rainy day follows the suspension of classes ordered this morning by the Ministry of Education in areas under yellow alert, a preventive measure adopted in response to the same weather system.
