Claro restores fixed and mobile internet in the Dominican Republic after a nationwide outage caused by fiber cuts

Telecommunications company Claro said on Friday that it has fully restored the fixed and mobile internet services that suffered nationwide outages in the Dominican Republic, after a failure that left thousands of users offline or with intermittent service for about two hours.

In a first statement, posted on its Instagram account, the company said a partial failure was affecting some of its customers and that its technical team was working "at full speed" to restore connectivity. Two hours later, it announced that services had been restored to 100% and apologized for the inconvenience.

The company blamed the failure on two fiber-optic cuts caused by third parties. According to Claro, the second cut affected its redundancy system, causing intermittency and slowness in mobile, data and fixed services in different parts of the country. The company did not say where the cuts occurred or who might be responsible for the damage.

Claro said its technical staff continues to monitor the network to verify the stability of services. The outage drew complaints from users on social media from early in the morning, with reports of connection problems and delays in receiving messages.

Guido Gómez Mazara, president of the board of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), said the outage shows the need to promote greater competition in the country's telecom market. He called the incident a technological accident and said he expects Claro to offer institutional explanations about the causes and the location of the failure.
