Venezuela: ruling party and opposition close this Wednesday the third round of dialogue on electoral guarantees

Venezuela's ruling party and a sector of the Venezuelan opposition expect to conclude this Wednesday the third round of the dialogue table, focused on political and civil guarantees for a potential electoral process within the transition promoted by the United States following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January, Núcleo Noticias reported.

The talks, which began last Wednesday, addressed respect for civil rights and the renewal of institutions seen as close to the government of interim president Delcy Rodríguez. According to sources linked to the negotiations, no concrete agreements from this phase have been announced so far.

The opposition delegation held meetings over the past week with nongovernmental organizations and representatives of the Caracas Bar Association, where proposals aimed at transforming the justice system, one of the items on the reform agenda, were reviewed.

Topics discussed in the two previous rounds, held in August and September, included the full renewal of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), the unblocking of Venezuelan gold held in England, the lifting of restrictions on news portals, and measures related to freedom of expression. The NGO Foro Penal demanded on Tuesday that the renewal of the TSJ be accompanied by structural changes to the justice system and a reform of the Penal Code.

The table does not include María Corina Machado or Edmundo González Urrutia, two of the opposition's leading figures. Dinorah Figuera, who heads the opposition delegation, met on October 9 in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who urged her to advance political freedoms and electoral reform.
