Trough to bring downpours and electrical storms Wednesday; five provinces remain under alert
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) reported that a trough will bring localized downpours, electrical storms and wind gusts during the afternoon of this Wednesday, October 21, in several areas of the Dominican Republic, with maximum temperatures ranging between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius.
The agency explained that the morning will be mostly clear with little rain and hot conditions, but in the afternoon the combination of the trough with daytime heating and orographic effects will favor rainfall over the northeast, the northwest, the Central Mountain Range and the border zone.
Given these conditions, the National Forecast Center maintains weather alerts for the provinces of Dajabón, Santiago, Valverde, Puerto Plata and Santiago Rodríguez, due to the risk of sudden urban flooding and rising rivers, streams and creeks.
In Greater Santo Domingo, scattered clouds, little rain and hot weather are expected, with lows between 23 and 25 degrees and highs between 32 and 34 degrees, according to the forecast. INDOMET recommended that the public drink enough water, wear light-colored, loose clothing, and avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. without protection, with special attention to older adults, pregnant women and children.
On cyclone activity, the agency said a non-tropical low-pressure area located off the east coast of the United States has a 40 percent chance of cyclone formation in the next 48 hours and over the next seven days, with possible evolution into a subtropical system. It specified, however, that this system poses no danger to the Dominican Republic.
