Shooting on the George Washington Bridge: Upper-level lanes closed, driver reported with gunshot wound

A driver was found with a gunshot wound to the head on the night of Tuesday, October 20, in the westbound lanes of the upper level of the George Washington Bridge, which connects Manhattan with New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police reported.

According to the official report, officers responded around 7:00 p.m. after receiving a call about a single-vehicle crash. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the wounded driver; he was taken to Englewood Medical Center in New Jersey in critical condition, according to initial reports.

Authorities temporarily closed the westbound upper-level lanes, causing heavy congestion for motorists leaving Manhattan toward New Jersey. The disruptions extended to the access roads, including the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx.

The incident further complicated traffic because commercial vehicles can only use the upper level of the bridge. The investigation is in the hands of the Port Authority Police, who so far have not determined the circumstances of the shooting nor announced any arrests. No other injuries were reported.
