Dominican Republic and Canada open a new stage of cooperation with an aviation security agreement

OTTAWA, Canada. — The Dominican Republic and Canada are seeking to take their relations to a new stage, with civil aviation security agreements, investment opportunities and stronger ties between business leaders from both countries, El diario del sur reported on Tuesday.

The rapprochement was marked by the official visit of Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó, the first by a Dominican foreign minister to Canadian territory in the last 20 years.

Bisonó and his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, agreed on the need to strengthen bilateral ties and expand cooperation in strategic sectors. "We are convinced that we will further consolidate our business, tourism and investment environment," the Dominican minister said of the meeting.

Anand said the talks focused on strengthening supply chains, attracting investment in critical minerals and energy, and improving connectivity for travelers and businesses.

During the meeting, Bisonó highlighted the Dominican Republic's geographic location, its air and maritime connectivity and its potential as a logistics and industrial platform for the Caribbean and other markets. They also addressed the situation in Haiti and the importance of maintaining international cooperation to help stabilize that country; the Dominican official thanked Canada for its support of efforts to restore Haitian security and stability.

One of the concrete outcomes of the visit was the signing of a cooperation instrument to strengthen civil aviation security on certain flights between the Dominican Republic and Canada. The agreement establishes a framework for deploying specialized, properly trained government personnel to protect aircraft and their occupants against acts of unlawful interference and serious crimes, under the principles of reciprocity, respect for sovereignty and compliance with national laws.

The agenda also included a working lunch at the Canadian Foreign Ministry headquarters, attended by Dominican business leaders Samuel Conde, Antonio Yapor, Fernando Capellán and Juan Tomás Díaz, aimed at bringing the private sector together with authorities to identify concrete business, investment and development opportunities.

Conde, a founding partner of DP World Caucedo, said the visit opens an opportunity to elevate relations between both countries, while Fernando Capellán, president of Grupo M and the Codevi industrial park, argued that Canada's international openness and the Dominican Republic's geographic proximity offer favorable conditions for expanding trade. "There are countless opportunities to do business with Canadians," Capellán said.
