United Kingdom creates the first AI biosecurity lab, with £100 million and backing from OpenAI and Anthropic
London — The United Kingdom government has announced the creation of the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), which it describes as the world's first organisation devoted exclusively to bringing frontier AI together with biosecurity, with £100 million in public funding.
The lab will also receive up to £200 million in model credits and computing capacity from OpenAI and Anthropic: OpenAI will provide £100 million through its Rosalind Biodefense programme, with access to its most capable life-sciences models, and Anthropic will contribute up to £100 million in credits, model access and technical support. Google DeepMind and the British company Basecamp Research will collaborate on research.
Its first task will be to develop capabilities to detect emerging biological threats earlier and to accelerate the creation of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures, working with the UK's national biosecurity centres and its life-sciences industry.
The announcement warns that advances in AI open unprecedented opportunities for science, but also change the biological risk landscape: increasingly capable systems can accelerate research and, at the same time, lower barriers to harmful activity. The lab will operate as an independent non-profit organisation, within a National AI Biosecurity Initiative that brings together the UK Health Security Agency, the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
The government has also allocated a separate £65 million to develop countermeasures against dangerous pathogens. AI minister Kanishka Narayan said the ambition is for the lab to become a major global institution bringing together “world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats.”
For the public, the project matters because it aims to spot the next threat before it becomes a crisis: the lab promises faster responses to outbreaks and better preparedness against risks that AI itself helps to create.
