Magnitude 4.5 earthquake shakes the eastern Dominican Republic and is felt in Punta Cana

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the eastern Dominican Republic on Wednesday afternoon, November 4, according to preliminary data from the National Seismology Center of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD). The quake occurred at 1:08 p.m., with its epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 104.2 kilometers east-northeast of Miches, in the country's eastern region.

The agency placed the epicenter at coordinates 19.180 north latitude and -68.080 west longitude, and estimated the quake's depth at 10 kilometers. So far, no damage or injuries related to the event have been reported.

Minutes after the tremor, residents of the eastern region began sharing their accounts on social media, especially in Punta Cana, in La Altagracia province, one of the country's main tourist areas. “The table moved here,” one user commented while describing what happened.

Reports also came from Santo Domingo Este, where a resident of the San Isidro neighborhood said he felt the movement, although much more faintly. Other citizens said they felt no shaking at all and learned about the quake through seismic monitoring apps.

How an earthquake is perceived can vary depending on distance from the epicenter, depth, terrain characteristics and building conditions, specialists explain. The data released so far remains preliminary while the National Seismology Center completes its record of the event.
