Dominican Republic: Education Ministry suspends classes Tuesday at schools in vulnerable areas of ten provinces under yellow alert
Santo Domingo — The Ministry of Education (Minerd) ordered the preventive suspension of classes for Tuesday, October 27, at schools located in vulnerable areas of the provinces under yellow alert, amid the weather conditions caused by a trough affecting the country.
The institution explained that the measure seeks to prevent risk situations at schools exposed to flooding, located near rivers and streams, coastal areas and zones prone to landslides, due to the rains affecting several districts.
According to the situational report from Minerd's Environmental Management and Risk Directorate, based on the Emergency Operations Center (COE) bulletin issued Monday at 7:00 p.m., ten districts are under yellow alert: Bahoruco, Independencia, Pedernales, Barahona, Azua, San José de Ocoa, Peravia, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal and the National District.
Under green alert remain Dajabón, Elías Piña, San Juan, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez and Monte Plata, where strict monitoring of school facilities is in place.
The suspension does not mean a general closure of all schools in these districts; it is aimed specifically at facilities located in at-risk areas, and its implementation must be coordinated with regional and district directors, taking into account the particular conditions of each community.
Minerd keeps its Situation Room permanently active and monitors eleven educational regions located in the area affected by the weather system, while emergency authorities repeated their call for people not to cross swollen streams or bathe in resorts while the weather warnings remain in effect.
