Dominican Republic: Migration reinforces border controls amid Haiti's security crisis
Santo Domingo — The General Directorate of Migration reinforced controls along the border with Haiti amid the security crisis affecting the neighboring country, according to Monday's front page of Diario Libre.
President Luis Abinader is expected to address the Haitian crisis and border security on Monday, after meeting with the defense minister and the foreign minister to discuss the situation, according to the same outlet.
Former president Leonel Fernández asked the government for preventive measures in response to Haiti's security crisis, in a context in which the disappearance of four Salvadoran aviation technicians on October 18 in Croix-des-Bouquets keeps the region on edge.
According to reports cited by the Haitian press, El Salvador raised to 450 the number of troops deployed in Haiti to support the search for the four technicians, in coordination with the Gang Suppression Force and the Haitian National Police.
Tension at the border is also affecting trade: binational commerce in Dajabón had already been hit last week by violence on Haitian territory, according to earlier reports.
Dominican authorities have insisted that the priority is to preserve security in the border area and maintain migration control, while the international community closely follows the evolution of the Haitian crisis.
