Marbete rises to RD$2,000 and RD$4,000, opening a debate between the government and the opposition
Santo Domingo — The Dominican Directorate General of Internal Taxes (DGII) opened the 2026-2027 marbete vehicle registration renewal on Thursday, October 29, with new fees: RD$2,000 for vehicles manufactured through 2021 and RD$4,000 for those from 2022 onward, under Administrative Resolution DDG-AR1-2026-00009.
The increase is RD$500 for vehicles from 2020 or earlier and RD$1,000 for 2022 and newer models, compared with the previous fees of RD$1,500 and RD$3,000. Vehicles from 2021 are the only group moving to a lower bracket: they go from RD$3,000 to RD$2,000. The DGII explained that the fees had not been changed since 2016 and that cumulative inflation between September 2016 and September 2026 reached 58.1%; a full update would have raised payments to RD$2,372 and RD$4,743. This season, 2,136,468 vehicles are eligible to renew.
The deadline to renew without a surcharge is January 31, 2027. Those who miss it will face a RD$2,000 surcharge, plus penalties of RD$2,100 for an outstanding 2025-2026 marbete and RD$3,100 for 2024-2025 or earlier periods. Renewal is available at dgii.gov.do and through the DGII Móvil app until January 17, 2027.
The increase opened a debate between the government and the opposition. Senate President Ricardo de los Santos said the measure was contemplated in Law 30-26, on Pro-Growth Economic Measures, although none of that law's 62 articles changes marbete fees: the law only mentions the tax's regulations among its considerations. National District Senator Omar Fernández, of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, called the increase part of a gradually applied tax reform, while that party's Economic Affairs Secretariat questioned the use of inflation to update the tax. The DGII justified the update as part of efforts to strengthen public revenue.
