Dominican Republic: Indomet forecasts heavy rain this Sunday across 27 provinces and Greater Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo — The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) forecast very heavy downpours, thunderstorms, wind gusts and isolated hail for this Sunday, November 1, across much of the Dominican Republic, due to a trough at several levels of the troposphere and east-northeast winds, according to its 6:00 a.m. bulletin.

The rainfall, which began in the early morning and will continue into the afternoon, will mainly affect 17 provinces, Greater Santo Domingo and areas of the Atlantic coast, the Cibao Valley, the eastern plain, the Central Mountain Range and the border region. Among the localities under the rain's influence are La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Espaillat, Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez and San Juan.

The National Forecast Center maintains weather alerts for Greater Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal over the risk of urban flooding from rainfall expected over the next 24 hours. For the National District and the municipalities of Santo Domingo Norte, Oeste and Este, increasing cloudiness is expected in the afternoon, along with moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms and wind gusts. Low temperatures will range from 22 °C to 23 °C, and highs from 30 °C to 32 °C.

Indomet advised operators of small, medium and fragile vessels on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts to take extreme caution due to reduced visibility, lightning and locally dangerous surf, and urged the public to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Heavy rain will continue on Monday, especially after midday, in the northern and southeastern regions, the Central Mountain Range and the border zone.
