Dominican Republic: COE keeps 16 districts on alert over trough, eight yellow and eight green
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — The Emergency Operations Center (COE) raised alert levels this Sunday in 16 districts across the country over the risk of urban flooding and rising rivers, streams and creeks from downpours caused by a trough.
Under yellow alert are Pedernales, Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia, Azua, Peravia, San Cristóbal and San José de Ocoa. Under green alert remain Greater Santo Domingo, the National District, Elías Piña, Dajabón, La Vega, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel and San Juan, according to the list released by the agency.
The update, issued at 1:00 p.m. on October 25, responds to rain already recorded and to a forecast of rainfall that will spread and intensify during the afternoon, according to the report.
According to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), the trough and moisture carried by south and southeast winds will bring moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms and wind gusts, especially in the southeast, the northeast and the Central Mountain Range.
The COE urged the public not to cross rivers, streams or flooded areas, to review the family emergency plan and to stay tuned to official updates. In an emergency, people can call 9-1-1 or 809-472-0909.
Authorities also reiterated the recommendation not to use swimming areas recreationally in the provinces under alert while the rain forecast remains in effect.
