Dominican Republic proposes to host the Ibero-American Artificial Intelligence Alliance

President Luis Abinader proposed on Thursday that the Dominican Republic host the center that will drive the new Ibero-American Artificial Intelligence Alliance, during his address at the plenary session of the 30th Ibero-American Summit being held in Madrid.

«It is time to move from proposals to their implementation», Abinader told the heads of state and government gathered in the Royal Collections Gallery, according to the EFE news agency. The president proposed that the country host a center «that could operate as the entity that will drive the consolidation of this important instrument» and offered «all the institutional and technical infrastructure resources» the Dominican Republic has to host the alliance's headquarters.

«Artificial intelligence must be a tool to close gaps, not to widen inequalities», he said. Abinader also urged regional leaders to deepen South-South cooperation and to govern the digital transformation in line with digital rights, and called for closer collaboration on family farming, social protection and the fight against climate change, above all through early warning systems and risk management.

In his address, the president highlighted the country's social progress: monetary poverty fell from 19% in 2024 to 17.3% in 2025, with the improvement continuing in 2026, and the prevalence of undernourishment dropped below 2.5%, a milestone recognized by the FAO that allowed the country to leave the Hunger Map.

The proposal adds to the technology push Abinader presented at the 16th Ibero-American Business Meeting, where he noted that Google is developing a digital infrastructure project worth more than $1.5 billion in the Dominican Republic to install a large-scale data center, and projected that the Dominican economy will close the year with growth above 4.5%.

For now, the Dominican bid is a proposal to host the seat, not a final designation: the Ibero-American Artificial Intelligence Alliance is among the agreements reached at the summit, along with a cooperation network against natural disasters, the Academic Mobility Charter and agreements on care policies.

This story expands A Lo Claro's coverage of the Dominican participation in the summit, whose opening was published in Wednesday's edition: Abinader takes part in the opening of the 30th Ibero-American Summit in Madrid alongside King Felipe VI.
