Dominican Republic: Abinader congratulates Lula on his reelection in Brazil and bets on a more integrated Latin America
Santo Domingo — Dominican President Luis Abinader on Monday congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his reelection to a fourth term, following his victory in the runoff held on Sunday, October 25, in Brazil.
In a message posted on his account on the social network X, Abinader greeted the Brazilian people for what he described as a civic and participatory election day, and congratulated Lula on his election to a new term.
“May we continue working together in this renewed four-year term for a more integrated and prosperous Latin America,” the Dominican president wrote, betting on continued cooperation between both countries over the next four years.
According to official results reported by De Último Minuto, with 99.98% of ballot boxes counted, Lula won 51.78% of valid votes, against 48.22% for opposition Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, in a tight runoff that will allow him to take on a fourth term, his second in a row.
Abinader's message joins reactions from other leaders in the region who have recognized the Brazilian president's victory and expressed their willingness to maintain cooperative relations with his government, in a scenario marked by internal polarization in Brazil and expectations about the role the country will play in Latin America.
For the Dominican Republic, Brazil is one of the region's leading economies and a major player in Latin American political and economic relations, so the Dominican government has stressed its interest in continuing bilateral dialogue and collaboration in this new period.
