Abinader announces groundbreaking for the Ámbar highway within 15 days
President Luis Abinader announced this Wednesday in Madrid that within 15 days the groundbreaking ceremony will take place for the construction of the Ámbar highway, the road of about 35 kilometers that will connect Santiago with Puerto Plata, in the north of the Dominican Republic.
The president made the announcement at the start of his official activities this Wednesday, after a bilateral meeting with Sergio Díaz-Granados, executive president of CAF, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, an institution that showed interest in backing the construction of the project.
According to the government, a first budget allocation of RD$5.78 billion in state funds has already been delivered so the work can start without stopping. Site preparation has already begun in Montellano, Puerto Plata, and the first two environmental licenses have been obtained to start two stretches on the Puerto Plata-Santiago and Santiago-Puerto Plata routes, explained the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza.
The Ámbar highway is a project long awaited in the northern region. By cutting a trip of more than an hour to about 35 minutes, it will ease freight transport, boost tourism and attract new investment, according to the Presidency.
The project was awarded by the RD Vial Trust to the Consorcio Autopista del Ámbar, S.R.L., made up of Magna, Rizek Constructora, Ingeniería Estrella and Constructora Mar, for RD$28.8 billion.
The announcement comes as part of Abinader's official agenda in Madrid, where he is taking part in the 30th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, held on November 4 and 5.
