OpenAI wins Anthropic customers with discounts of up to 90%, The Information reports

San Francisco, United States — OpenAI is winning major enterprise customers from Anthropic with aggressive discounts, according to a report by The Information published on October 24 under the title 'Anthropic's Margin is OpenAI's Opportunity,' summarized on Sunday by several technology outlets.

The most striking case is Replit, the AI coding platform, which moved most of its AI spending to OpenAI after receiving more than 30% off a contract worth over $100 million a year, and after Anthropic ended a discount it had previously granted it, according to the report.

At Rippling, a human-resources software company, the shift was even more dramatic: in May, Anthropic's models handled 57% of its engineers' coding work and OpenAI's 16%; those shares have now flipped, with 52% for OpenAI and 18% for Anthropic, because the company wanted to cut costs and OpenAI proved cheaper, CEO Parker Conrad told the publication.

The report also says online-learning company DataCamp was offered a 40% discount on the condition that it use Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, and that a U.S. bank with more than $7 billion in assets doubled its ChatGPT seats to 500 employees at no extra charge, paying under $7 per user against the usual $20 or more.

According to summaries of the report, neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has commented publicly on the figures. The context matters: Anthropic is preparing to go public — IFR reported it could file its public paperwork as soon as October 26 — and both companies face pressure from cheaper Chinese models such as Moonshot's Kimi K3.1 Pro.

The lesson for the market is that, for many companies, frontier models have become interchangeable enough for price to decide. For users, that means a buyer's market: it pays to ask for a better price or test a rival before renewing.
