OpenAI brings ChatGPT ads to 14 more Latin American countries and accelerates its ad business
San Francisco — OpenAI announced Wednesday it will expand ads inside ChatGPT to 26 more countries, bringing its advertising product to more than 80 countries. The expansion includes 14 additional Latin American countries, among them Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, following earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil, the company said.
The announcement comes with figures showing the speed of the business: more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns on ChatGPT, and in September the company said ads were generating revenue at a pace equal to $1 billion a year, a milestone reached in under 200 days after launch. According to a Fortune report cited by the trade press, OpenAI is on its way to $2.5 billion in booked ad revenue for the full year — a pace it took Google’s ad business about four years to reach.
“Advertising helps support free and low-cost access to ChatGPT for people around the world,” the company said, noting that ads appear only on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free. The expansion also adds markets across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, including Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The move rests on an audience advertisers can no longer ignore: PYMNTS Intelligence research found that 80% of AI-tool users have tried ChatGPT at least once, far above Google Gemini (48%) or Microsoft Copilot (30%), and that ChatGPT’s share of consumer product research climbed from 2% to 30% over two years. “ChatGPT has moved from a tool people used to ask questions into a place where buying decisions actually start,” the report said.
