AP calls Kathy Hochul the winner: she will remain governor of New York
The Associated Press (AP) has called Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul the winner of this Tuesday, November 3 election, keeping her at the helm of New York State for a new four-year term. At the time of the call, with around 12% of precincts reporting, Hochul had more than 613,000 votes to about 179,000 for Republican Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive.
Hochul became governor in August 2021 after Andrew Cuomo resigned and won her first full term in 2022. In this race she faced Blakeman, who was backed by President Donald Trump. Final polls had her favored by double digits: Siena put her at 54% to 40% and Marist at 53% to 42%.
The AP call came minutes after polls closed in New York at 9:00 p.m. The Democratic win in the governor's race follows Mikie Sherrill's victory in New Jersey, called by AP at 8:29 p.m.
In the U.S. House, New York races were still too early to call as of this report, including those of the Dominican-origin candidates. A Lo Claro will keep updating results as AP calls each race.
