Milei calls Pedro Sánchez an «impresentable dictator» in Madrid, and Spain's leader answers with irony

Madrid — Argentina's President Javier Milei began his agenda in Madrid on Wednesday with harsh criticism of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, whom he called an «impresentable dictator» and a «thief» during a speech at the Nueva Economía Fórum, at the Real Casino Gran Círculo, Argentine media reported.

«Spain managed to welcome hundreds of thousands of Argentines who escaped misery and lack of future, the fruit of the sinister socialism of the 21st century, its Argentine branch, which is Kirchnerism, and which you suffer with the impresentable dictator Pedro Sánchez,» Milei said before business leaders and economists, to applause from the audience. The president urged Spaniards to «kick the socialists out» and blamed Europe's left-wing parties for the continent's economic stagnation and for a migration policy that, he claimed, traces «a path of decadence very difficult to reverse.»

Milei's visit to Spain, his seventh since taking office, comes in the midst of the campaign for the Spanish general elections on November 29. The Argentine president also used the occasion to assert that «the Malvinas are Argentine, by right, by history and by geography,» although he ruled out a military solution: «We do not believe in military solutions. It is a diplomatic claim,» he said.

Sánchez's response came minutes after the speech and was dripping with irony. The Spanish leader shared on Instagram an image of himself listening to «Fanático,» the song by Lali Espósito, an artist who has had several public clashes with Milei. «While I'm in the car, on my way to Burgos, to listen to this great Argentine hit. I love it!» he wrote. Earlier, Sánchez had posted a video on X declaring himself «leftist and proud of it»: «If raising pensions, increasing the minimum wage or defending the right to abortion is being leftist, I am leftist,» he said.
