Mamdani asks NYC parking lot owners not to cooperate with ICE

NEW YORK. — Mayor Zohran Mamdani, together with more than 100 elected officials, sent a letter to roughly a thousand owners of private parking lots and garages across the city asking them to refuse cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to City Hall, the letter asks owners not to rent, lend or make their properties available to the federal agency as staging areas for immigrant detention operations.

Local law already bars ICE from operating on municipal property without a court order, but that restriction does not extend to private lots. With the letter, the city administration seeks for garage owners to voluntarily adopt a similar protection.

The initiative adds to tensions between the city and the federal government over immigration policy, a high-impact issue for communities such as the Dominican one, the largest among New York's Latinos.
