Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor of the Mets wins the 2026 Roberto Clemente Award
New York — New York Mets Puerto Rican shortstop Francisco Lindor is the winner of the 2026 Roberto Clemente Award, Major League Baseball (MLB) announced Monday.
The 32-year-old infielder will receive the award prior to Game 3 of the World Series at Tropicana Field, the league said.
Lindor is the fifth Puerto Rican-born player to win the annual honor, joining Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltrán, Carlos Delgado and Edgar Martinez.
The Roberto Clemente Award recognizes the player who best represents the game of baseball through character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field, and is named after the legendary Puerto Rican outfielder and Hall of Famer.
“This is something when our kids grow up, they're going to look back and say, 'My mom and dad were very cool because they were blessing others and helping others,'” Lindor said after learning he had won, according to SNY.
The announcement comes in the middle of the World Series, in a season in which Lindor, one of the most visible Latin figures in the major leagues, adds one of the most prestigious honors away from the field.
