Iran conditions reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on the U.S. fulfilling its seven-day plan
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said the United States must meet the conditions of the seven-day plan proposed by Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world's oil flows and which has been closed for months, the Tasnim agency reported this Wednesday, October 21.
"We have presented an initiative that extends over seven days and includes the opening of the Strait of Hormuz on the sixth day, if the American side accepts the Iranian conditions and fulfills them," Araghchi said in an interview with the Iraqi network Al Iraqiya.
The Iranian foreign minister said Washington expressed its "agreement" with the conditions but raised new demands in the negotiations the two countries are holding through mediators such as Qatar and Pakistan. He stressed that Tehran's main demand is that the United States fulfill all the commitments of the memorandum of understanding signed in June before moving toward new negotiations for a "comprehensive agreement."
The conditions include a cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, an end to the U.S. naval blockade against Iran, the release of frozen Iranian assets and the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil.
In parallel, Iran set up special navigation routes through the Strait of Hormuz to allow the passage of vessels carrying oil from Iraq and ease the economic impact on Baghdad, according to Araghchi. He also said the cartographic and technical procedures with Oman were completed to register the new nautical charts with the International Maritime Organization.
Pressure on the energy market continues to rise: Brent climbed back above $110 a barrel, pressured by new attacks on ships in the strait, according to market analysts.
