Trump accepts the Republican defeat and warns he will veto Democratic laws as the count widens the majority

President Donald Trump on Wednesday accepted the results of Tuesday's midterm elections, in which the Democratic Party regained control of both chambers of Congress, while warning that he is prepared to use the veto against laws pushed by the new majority.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump previewed his approach to the Congress that will take office on January 3, 2027: 'They will send crazy things, and I will veto them.' Hours later, in a phone conversation with Politico, he softened his tone: 'I will work with the Democrats to make sure everything turns out well for our country. I do not intend to veto everything.'

The presidential veto, however, has a constitutional limit: Congress can override it with two-thirds of the votes in each chamber, that is, 67 senators and 290 representatives. With 54 Senate seats, Democrats are 13 short of that supermajority, and in the House dozens of districts remain undecided.

The Associated Press count kept widening the Democratic lead on Wednesday afternoon: in the House, Democrats had won 232 seats and led in 29 more, against 146 won and 28 leading for Republicans. In the Senate, the split held at 54 Democrats to 44 Republicans, with two races still undecided, Alaska and Mississippi.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer summed up the result on X with a single figure: '54 seats and counting.' House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, in line to become Speaker, described the night in one word: 'Tsunami.'

Trump also sought to distance himself from his party's defeat. On his Truth network he wrote: 'I was not on the ballot, and if I had been, we would have won BY A LANDSLIDE!' In another interview he admitted he was 'a little surprised' and acknowledged that the war with Iran may have influenced the vote, although he defended his policy toward Tehran and said he does not regret starting it.

This follow-up updates the balance published by A Lo Claro on Wednesday morning, when the House was already projected for Democrats with 228 seats to 139 for Republicans and 68 districts pending.
