Mike Johnson steps aside from House Republican leadership after midterm defeat

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced this Wednesday that he will not seek a Republican leadership post in the new Congress, after his party's defeat in Tuesday's midterm elections, in which Democrats regained control of the House and the Senate.

Johnson communicated the decision in a letter sent to House Republicans on November 4, as reported by the Associated Press, Reuters and USA Today. "I make this decision with a heart full of gratitude and an abiding sense of pride in what we have accomplished together," wrote the Louisiana lawmaker, who led the House for three years.

The outgoing Speaker explained that he is stepping away from leadership to spend more time with his wife, Kelly, and their four children. "I believe the time has come for me to give them more of the attention and presence they so richly deserve," he wrote in the letter.

Johnson is not leaving Congress: he was reelected on Tuesday in Louisiana's fourth district and will remain a representative, but he will not seek the minority leader post when the new Congress takes office on January 3, 2027. On election night in Shreveport, he had already acknowledged the loss of the majority and described leading the House as the honor of his life.

The race to succeed him has already taken shape. Current Majority Leader Steve Scalise, also from Louisiana, has said he will seek the Republican leadership, and he is expected to face fierce competition from Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio. Republicans will hold their internal leadership elections on November 10.

Whoever is elected will lead the Republican conference in the minority in a House expected to be led by Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, and will have to manage the relationship with President Donald Trump, whose agenda will now face a Congress controlled by Democrats.
