Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race
Detroit, Michigan — Democratic Representative Haley Stevens broke with her party on Sunday and endorsed Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the race for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat, just two days before Tuesday's midterm elections.
Stevens announced her endorsement hours after appearing alongside Rogers at a church service in Detroit on Sunday afternoon. The congresswoman, who narrowly lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee, said El-Sayed had told her she was no longer welcome in his campaign and should stay away.
"I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today," Stevens wrote on X. The decision stunned observers from both parties and drew immediate reactions, including from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and from President Donald Trump, who celebrated the announcement on Truth Social.
El-Sayed and Stevens had traded public criticism in recent days over their stances on Israel. Stevens had asked on Friday for an apology over a campaign ad that, she said, claimed Jews are responsible for America's economic woes, and she was reportedly disinvited from a church event with El-Sayed and Democratic Representative James Clyburn.
The Michigan race is one of the closest in the country: according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, El-Sayed leads Rogers by 3.5 percentage points, a margin that keeps the contest open heading into Tuesday, when control of Congress will be decided for the final two years of Trump's term.
