Eight Dominicans with a shot at victory compete Tuesday in the United States elections

New York — Eight Dominicans or people of Dominican descent are among the candidates to watch in the United States midterm elections this Tuesday, November 3, in which all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and numerous state and local offices are up for grabs, according to Dominican press roundups.

The highest-profile candidacy is that of Darializa Ávila Chevalier, 32, Democrat for New York's 13th District, covering parts of Manhattan and the Bronx with a large Dominican presence. She won the Democratic primary against Congressman Adriano Espaillat and faces Republican Jomo Williams. If elected, she would be the first woman of Dominican descent to reach the federal Congress, in a district that has never elected a Republican.

Also seeking a House seat are Tonty Emmanuel “Manny” Rutinel, son of a Dominican immigrant, for Colorado's 8th District, where he faces Republican Gabe Evans in a race in a technical tie, and Analilia Mejía, Democrat for New Jersey's 11th District, who won the April special election and seeks a full term.

In the New York State Assembly, Manny de los Santos (District 72, Washington Heights, Inwood and Marble Hill) and George Álvarez (District 78, the Bronx) seek to stay on, both unopposed on the ballot, along with Amanda Séptimo (District 84), Karines Reyes (District 87) and Yudelka Tapia (District 86), the latter facing María Díaz and Shery A. Olivo. Rounding out the list is Judge Manuel J. Méndez, who seeks to remain on the New York State Supreme Court.

Polls open Tuesday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the first House results are expected after 7:00 p.m. Dominican time.
