Five Dominicans to debut in the World Series: Rays and Brewers battle for the title
MILWAUKEE. — Five Dominican players will debut on a World Series roster when the Fall Classic opens this Friday between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
Freddy Peralta, Junior Caminero and Jorge Mateo will wear the Rays uniform, while Abner Uribe and Gary Sánchez will do so for the Brewers. With them, 146 Dominicans will have reached the Major League finals, 14.6% of the 991 Dominicans who have played in the big leagues since Osvaldo Virgil opened the doors 70 years ago.
The quintet brings heavyweight storylines: Caminero hit 42 home runs and drove in 101 runs in the regular season; Sánchez became the first Dominican catcher with 200 home runs in MLB; Peralta, the American League Championship Series MVP, is slated to start Game 3 against Milwaukee, his former team; and Uribe is a piece of the Brewers' bullpen.
The first Dominican landing in a final came from Juan Marichal and brothers Felipe and Mateo Alou in the 1962 edition. Of those who have played in the Fall Classic, 69 won championships, with Alejandro Peña, David Ortiz and Santiago Casillas leading with three rings each.
Milwaukee, with 103 wins, and Tampa Bay, with 98, will chase their first championship in franchise history in an unprecedented World Series matchup.
