CNM postpones election of the six new Supreme Court justices due to Abinader's schedule

SANTO DOMINGO. — The National Council of the Judiciary (CNM) will not meet this Wednesday, October 21, as scheduled, so the election of the six new justices of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) is postponed until a new date to be announced in the coming days.

The decision was announced by Justice Minister Antoliano Peralta Romero, who explained that the postponement is due to unavoidable commitments of President Luis Abinader, who chairs the body. According to him, the president himself requested the postponement of the deliberative session.

The meeting had on its agenda one of the year's most consequential institutional processes: filling the six vacancies on the Supreme Court of Justice and selecting, among the 17 justices of the plenary, who will assume the presidency of the court and, therefore, of the Council of the Judiciary. The Council must also appoint the first and second substitutes of the presidency, positions that became available after the departure of justices Manuel Ramón Herrera Carbuccia and Nancy Salcedo Fernández.

Peralta Romero clarified that once the CNM makes its decision, the new justices will be sworn in and formally integrated as a matter of routine. The final stage of the judicial reorganization will be in the hands of the justices themselves: the new plenary will assign the chambers to the magistrates and define their respective presidents in accordance with the law.

The postponement comes in the final stretch of the judicial renewal process, and the body said the new deliberation date will be announced in due course.
