Miami will build the Plaza Azúcar in honor of Celia Cruz, the Guarachera of Cuba
Miami — The city of Miami will build the Plaza Azúcar, a space in the Little Havana neighborhood that will honor the life, music and legacy of Cuban singer Celia Cruz (1925-2003), City Hall announced Wednesday, according to EFE.
The announcement coincides with the date on which the artist, known as "La Guarachera de Cuba" and the Queen of Salsa, would have turned 101. The plaza will sit along the Calle Ocho corridor, one of Little Havana's most emblematic areas, known for its cultural activity and the presence of Cuban immigrants.
The plaza will include a sculpture designed by artist Alex Kaufman, who specializes in large-format works. During the presentation event, scheduled for tonight, authorities will unveil a recreation of the legendary singer's voice using artificial intelligence.
The event will feature Omer Pardillo, representative of the singer's artistic estate and the person responsible for preserving her legacy. Attendees will also receive commemorative U.S. 25-cent coins bearing the artist's image.
Celia Cruz became in 2024 the first Afro-Latina artist to appear on a U.S. 25-cent coin, as part of the American Women Quarters program, which recognizes women who have contributed to the country's history.
The tribute will join other U.S. public spaces dedicated to the singer, born in Havana, such as Celia Cruz Way in Miami Beach (Florida) and Celia Cruz Park in Union City (New Jersey).
