Suspicious letter sent to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Bronx office: FBI and NYPD investigate

THE BRONX, NEW YORK. — U.S. Representative from New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reported on Tuesday that her district office in the Bronx received a suspicious letter, which is being investigated by the New York Police Department (NYPD) and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.

The case is part of a broader wave: more than two dozen lawmakers across the country, both Democrats and Republicans, reported that their offices received suspicious letters by mail in recent weeks. Several reported receiving a white powdery substance, which prompted evacuations and the intervention of authorities.

No injuries have been reported in any of the incidents and, in at least six cases, the substances contained in the letters were determined not to be dangerous, according to the report.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat, described the incident as an attempt to intimidate elected officials ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. "This series of suspicious mailings began two weeks before consequential midterm elections and appears intended to intimidate public servants and sow further division," the congresswoman said.

"Political violence has no place in our country. It is always unacceptable, and we must all refuse to normalize an unsafe and volatile political environment that puts everyday people at risk," she added.

CNN previously reported that the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police are investigating the letters sent to congressional offices, as the inquiry into the origin of the mailings continues.
