Bukele travels to Washington to meet Trump over the four Salvadorans held in Haiti

San Salvador — El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele is traveling to Washington for a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, as the detention in Haiti of four Salvadoran aviation technicians remains unresolved.

The four were part of the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and went missing on Sunday, October 18 in the Santo area of Croix-des-Bouquets, after the ambush of their armored vehicle, according to reports.

Bukele issued an ultimatum to the Haitian gangs — believed to be the Chen Mechan and 400 Mawozo groups — warning he will take "additional measures" if the four are not freed safe and sound, and announced the deployment of a special forces contingent to Haiti to support the rescue.

Haiti's government declared the rescue an "absolute priority", though as of October 22 there was no publicly confirmed proof of life, keeping tensions high over the case's outcome.

Haiti's crisis, where gangs control large areas of Port-au-Prince and its surroundings, has escalated this year despite the multinational force's deployment, and the abduction of international mission personnel is one of the most serious incidents since its creation.
