Brewers seek 2-0 lead over Rays in World Series Game 2 tonight, after winning Game 1 twice
Milwaukee — The Brewers will look tonight to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2, at 7 p.m. Central (8 p.m. Eastern) at American Family Field. The announced starters are Drew Rasmussen for Tampa Bay and Logan Henderson for Milwaukee.
Game 1, won 3-2 by Milwaukee on Friday, ended in a way that has already entered Fall Classic history: the Brewers believed they had closed the game with a double play in the ninth inning, fireworks included, but video review, requested by manager Kevin Cash, showed that shortstop Cooper Pratt lifted his foot off second base before catching the ball. The play was overturned, Tampa Bay scored a run, and closer Trevor Megill had to strike out Jonny DeLuca to win the game “a second time.”
The star of Game 1 was Venezuelan catcher William Contreras, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, threw out two runners trying to steal, and won the first Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) challenge in World Series history, turning a ball into the third strike that ended the second inning against Víctor Mesa Jr.
Starter Jacob Misiorowski pitched five innings of one-run ball, and his first pitch, at 103.5 miles per hour, was the fastest ever to open a World Series game. Jackson Chourio, who opened the game with a first-pitch hit, drove in the insurance run in the seventh with another first-pitch single.
The Rays, who had stolen 10 bases in 10 attempts this postseason, went 0-for-2 in steal attempts against Contreras' arm. Milwaukee has won six straight postseason games and is 13-1 in its last 14 games.
Kylie Cantrall will perform the national anthem, and the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Hall of Famer Paul Molitor.
