St. Petersburg, Florida — The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time in franchise history, after beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field.

Ace Jacob Misiorowski threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and left the game with a right calf cramp, to a standing ovation from the Brewers fans who took over the section behind the visiting dugout for the last three games.

Rookie Cooper Pratt drove in two runs and set a Series rookie record with six straight hits, before a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Jackson Chourio set a five-game Series record with 11 hits.

Venezuelan catcher William Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player: he hit .381 (8-for-21) with four RBIs, and his sixth-inning double made it 3-0. He is the first World Series MVP in Brewers history.

The title comes in the 58th season of a franchise born as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 that moved to Milwaukee the following year. Its only previous World Series trip, in 1982, ended in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals after blowing a 3-1 lead in Game 7.
